Introduction – what is MyJourney?

MyJourney is an interactive website to guide you through every part of going abroad and help you get the most out of your international experience.

In the Should I Go? section, you can browse the numerous types of international experiences available to you through the University of Edinburgh and start to get an idea of the destinations that interest you. You’ll be able to see advice and feedback from previous students as well as information about academics, accommodation, cost of living, and other details for each specific institution.

This section will also help you become familiar with the personal, academic, and career benefits of going abroad and give you tips on researching potential destinations to decide if a particular experience is right for you. There are many factors to consider including your budget, your health and well-being, your academic requirements, and your personal goals. The tools available to you here should help give some clarity and make the decision process easier.

If you do decide to take on an international experience, the Should I Go? section will also guide you through the application process. Handy tips and detailed instructions on how to apply are located here.

The Before You Go section encompasses all parts of your international experience from your application acceptance to the day you depart. The interactive checklist includes information about insurance, visas, and accommodation and will help guide you through the tasks you have to complete before starting your journey. This section will also help you set goals for your time away that can be reviewed while you are abroad. Here you can start to think of the opportunities for growth that going abroad gives you.

Before you know it you will be on your way but we are well aware that the questions don’t stop while you’re gone. The Abroad! section has easily searchable guidance for many of the things that may come up while you’re away. Whether it’s an academic question, an insurance question or anything else, this is your first point of call for getting these answers.

We know that international experiences can be stressful and health issues or emergencies may come up. The Abroad! section features information about the many ways you can receive support for your mental and physical health while you’re away from campus. We want you to have the best experience possible and MyJourney and the Go Abroad Team is here to help.

MyJourney doesn’t end when you arrive back in Edinburgh. The Coming Home section is there to guide you through the experience of returning. With advice on reverse culture shock and reintegrating back into academic life at the University, MyJourney will prepare you for getting the most benefit as possible from your international experience.

MyJourney isn’t just a tool for advice or to answer frequently asked questions. International experiences give you a chance to create and reflect on goals while gaining a multitude of new skills and MyJourney gives you a platform to make the most out of these goals and skills. For example, you may be interested in becoming a Global Ambassador or continuing to pursue the language skills you’ve picked up abroad. MyJourney is there to advise you on the ways that you can do so. More broadly it’s there to help you use your experience to improve your employability, to grow academically and personally, and to make the most of this opportunity as a whole.
